No. A sell-by date is just the date that the product is meant to be sold by due to freshness or effectiveness. Stores are suppose to pull the product after that date. Usually if you buy something and the sell-by date is the day you bought it, you usually have 3-5 days after that to use it, otherwise it is no longer considered good. It also depends on the product. If it's perishable, it's 3-5 days after the sell-by date. If it's medication, you can still use it but it may not be as effective after 7 days of the sell-by date. Some people refuse to use things past a sell-by date. But you can. Just not for too long after.

I work at a food shelf and we have a table for all the old food donations it's amazing what people will eat they say that canned goods are still edible after a few years as long as the cans are not bulging gross huh? I myself am a compulsive date checker it all goes when it hits the sell by date I also check the labels at the grocery store you can never be too careful.

my brother has been known to throw out a half gallon of milk just because the sell by date comes up. doesn't matter if the milk is still good or not, he throws it out. he does this with all food.
try explaining that a sell by date is not the same as an "eat by" date. he can't hear a thing.
no it is not a desperate thing to do, unless you know that its bad food.

The sell by date is just a guideline. It doesn`t necessarily mean you have to throw it out on that day exactly. I judge for myself.

No. You actually have several more days to consume an item after the "sell-by date".
