My botany lecturers assured me that darkness was not simply the absence of light, but a type of light. True or false?

If light is made up of wavelengths and photons, is it not possible that with the abscence of wavelengths, which we react to, photons may cause molecular reactions in plants, ie. it reactrs to light ,but not as we know it?

Just realised, the 'crazy' lecturer was probably refering to the visible spectrum and the non-visible spectrum, which plants use quite extensively. Take away the visible spectrum and for humans it becomes dark, for plants its a wee midnight smorgesbord.

False. Light and dark are like heat and cold: the second is simply the absence of the first.

They dont go against each other. Darkness is the absence of Light. Light is the whole, Darkness is none, void. Light is what is there, darkness is if nothing was there. Light takes you forward as you can see, darkness keeps u stagnant as u dont know where u are and u will never know where to go or how to reach any place. Darkness is calm, tranquil as there is no beginning no end, its just an existence. In many ways its redundant. Light has a beginning, it moves, it creates shadows, it makes things possible.... philosophical enuf....or u need more..... I can go on n on n on ;) enjoy a well lighted yr ;)

Light is part of the electromagnetic spectrum, just like infra red, radio waves, microwaves, gamma radiation and ultraviolet. Darkness is not a part of any spectrum. So, darkness tends to be the case in the absence of light- that's all.
Photons are lights "make up"- i.e. what light is- known as lights elementary particles.

I'm afraid I'd say your lecturers are wrong...
Don't forget light is a type of energy, and darkness is just the state of things without that energy.

True and false. Total darkness is indeed the absence of light, but what people call darkness is usually just a low level of light. It is never truly dark anywhere outside a totally enclosed space such as a photographic darkroom or a can of beans – there is always some residual light around.

I gained all my knowledge of light and dark via Botany of sorts.

Any lecturer in Botany that says "Darkness is a type of light" needs shooting !!!

Darkness in botany terms is when a plant begins to use all of the nutes it has created during the light cycle know as "daytime".

This is true. I believe the term is negative light, but it is what fills our universe between the stars and planets. There are several theories about our universe and that's where I heard of darkness being a source of light. It's discussed a lot in the theory of white holes (yes, you read that right), also in the existence of worm holes.

I think that you ought to consider changing your school/college!
Darkness is, of course, the name given to the absence of light.
Your botany lecturers are surely pulling your leg! The answer is 'false'.

It all depends how light is defined by your teacher. Light is usually understood as the substance which enables us to
distinguish the shape of objects with our eyes.
However the nature of light is basically an invisible particle. we can only perceive light only at a certain frequency range. Beyound that we see it as dark.

no, darkness is not a type of light!

In darkness there is no light energy...

In botany darkness mean something else...

For example in photosynthesis process:

There is two phase:

in one case, in light, the plant produce food (light process)

In the other case, the plant uses that food to feed itself (dark process)

FALSE...how can darkness be a type of light. Darkness only happens when the lights go out....think of a total eclipse
