I have an aquarium that I kept cold water fish in they all caught an illness and died.
It has been a while since I last kept fish, but I would like to use the aquarium again for cold water fish.
What is the best thing for me to clean it out with to ensure my new fish are not infected with any germs that might still be in the tank.
obviously I will put the in clean water with the appropriate stuff to take all the nasty chemicals out of the water.

I have found the following simple steps help greatly:

Put stones or gravel in the bottom,
Use an aquarium with a pump and filter,
A flourescent light also helps,
You can get chemicals to take out the Chlorine etc, use this when you first fill up,
Put water in and get it pumping through the filter for a week or two before adding fish,
Only add two fish at a time, and have no more than 2 fish per 10 litres of water,
Buy 2 "algae eater" fish,
Use a weekly cleaner (Wilkinson Stores do a very good one),
Clean the tank out fully every 6-12 months - once your fish are established - they should survive being in a large butter container for a few hours or so.

Hope that helps.

Aquarium salt - it makes a good scrub, and when rinsed out with warm water it's very safe for the fish. You can also use bleach - just make sure you rinse well and then allow it to be 100% dry before filling the tank. You can also buy a tank cleaner, but it's fairly expensive.

From the sounds of it, your tank has probably sat empty for quite some time, at least over a week. If that is the case a simple washing and scrubbing with salt will be all that is needed. The vast majority of disease causing organisms in aquariums die when dried out.

To sanitize your tank use a washday product called Oxyclean. It is safe for aquaria and rinses away thoroughly without leaving a dangerous chemical like bleach does. You could alternatively use bleach, but the rinsing must be done very carefully followed by Tri-sodium phosphate to eliminate stray chlorine. Good luck.----PeeTee
