I recentley moved to Canada and got a notice that I had to get "an emissions check" in order to renew my liscense plates. What is that? Doesn't the catalytic converter take care of everything

The catalytic converter only cleans up what is left over from the exhaust of the engine. If the engine is running very badly, 10 converters won't clean it up. The emission check is used to reduce all smog forming emissions, unburnt fuel and oxides of nitrogen. In a properly running engine, these emissions will be very low and the converter will catch what's left.

We have had an emission test in Louisville for a while. Luckily it was finally stopped, since the number of cars that actually failed was so low.

Yearly, we had to take the car to a testing station and the operator would place a sensor up the exhaust and measure the hydrocarbons and the pollution that the car puts out. Some of the cars were randomly put on a dyno and ran up to speed to further check the pollution.

Some cities with bad air quality still use the emission testing, but I doubt if it does much good. good luck

they drive your car on a treadmill and moniter the exhaust in order to make sure your cars emissions are within environmental/air pollution regulations for where you live. the laws and limits are diffrent all over but if your car is newer and your exhaust system and catalytic converter are in good shape you should have no problems passing the test. i hear using a fuel treatment like gumout before the test also helps improve your cars emission performance as well but i have never bothered to try i it. my car is a 94 and pretty beat up, in maryland where i live (which has some of the toughest emissions standards in the country, and getting tested is mandatory every two years) i have never failed the test.

The test determines whether your car is emitting to much pollution. They test for various pollutants. If your car is running good, and hasn't had the emissions controls tampered with, you won't have a problem.
