the first thing one had to do was to be born into a samurai family. you could not become one otherwise. then, you were trained daily in the arts of the bow, sword, taijutsu and all other aspects of warfare along with gentler pursuits such as calligraphy, the tea ceremony, and hiaku and of course, zen buddhism, the philosophical mindset most useful to a samurai who faced death on a daily basis...

There are no genuine samurai now. They were warriors of the hereditary nobility of the Bushi class, comparable to European knights. A samurai was born a samurai, and nobody else could become one. They were in their heyday during the civil wars of the 16th Century when the Emperor lost power. When Tokugawa Ieyasu beat his last rival and became Shogun in 1603, the wars ended, and the samurai had to find other jobs. They became decadent and were abolished when Emperor Meiji took control in 1868. You can never be a British Duke, a French Comte, a German Baron or a Japanese Samurai, because they are all born as such noblemen.

Before Toyotomi Hideyoshi codified the class system in the late 16th centry, anyone who could carry a spear could serve a lord, and became one by default. After that, you were born into the class, or you weren't a Samurai.

samurai were a warrior caste system in feudal japan. so a time machine and to become part of a well respected family recognized by the shogunate is what you would need. samurai were more than just japanese warriors. they were families with longstanding traditions and honorbound to defend their lord with their lives. but in times of peace many of them were dirt poor and had few skills outside of fighting. but they were still considered nobles and could kill anyone man, woman, or child if they felt they were dishonored by them.
