Many nations would totally collapse due to a loss of funds, these funds coming through foreign aid, others through loss of business, (we buy a great number of products from other countries) still others would be thrown into civil war as we pulled our troops out. Most countries would be hurt in one way or another. We would also hurt ourselves because we sell a large number of products overseas and would lose our own business capital through loss of these sales. The world is too interconnected for anything like this to work. Sorry, but you have come up with an unworkable idea.

The world has changed a lot since we could boycott and be self sufficient. We need the rest of the world to keep our economy going. Look at what we would give up.
Most of the oil that we use is imported. Gas prices would sky rocket as people fought to get what was left.
Most of the clothes, appliances, trinkets that we buy come from overseas. Most of the cars are either produced overseas or have parts that are. A lot of our products are delivered overseas. But it certainly a good thing if people understand where the things that they purchase were made. Let's make a conscious decision to buy American.

Well, both America and the world would have some serious issues.
First, we would have problems because we import so many things. We would need to find a way to manufacture all of those things here if we were not going to import them from elsewhere. Also, we would need to start drilling in Alaska and everywhere else there might be oil.
Second, we would need to close our borders to immigration.
Third, we would need to grow more food!
Forth, the United Nations would need to move out of New York and find another country to be headquartered in, since we would not be members any longer.
Fifth, we could finally stop giving money to other countries for development, etc... and focus that money on our own citizens and development of our own resources.
However, this would cause a huge outcry in the international community as our country gives more money and resources to the rest of the world than any other country does. They would need to learn to live without us, and unfortunately then they would blame us for everything that goes wrong. But wait - they already do that now...

Nothing regarding other countries. What do we export? How much do we depend on imports? Where would we find new doctors and scientists? Most are foreign.
Why would you take a "lot of heat" anyway? It will never happen.
If anything - which is far more scary - a more serious concern would be what would happen if the rest of the world boycotted the United States!

The global caliphate would take over, we would have a much, much deadlier war later.
Our middle class would come back in the meantime.
World production would have to be sold locally.
The world bank would have to forgive it's self.
Russia would become muslim. China would be fighting them off in the mountains, then later in the plains.
Central Africa would become a vast graveyard.
Australia would have to patrol it's beaches for insurgents.
Japan would have to use submarines to supply oil.
Basically we would embark on a new dark age. The bird flu would spread from coastal china to Russia, to Europe.
We would carry Canada and Mexico with us and become an island of prosperity until war.

I've read through the answers and there are some pretty good ones. I think that the world would stumble a bit and then adjust. Most of what the US exports is readily available elsewhere. Some other nation (probably Russia) would become the world police. Many countries would be in dire straits for time due to the lack of US funding and wars would be small but many. The US itself would have a hard time of it too. We would be able to produce enough to sustain us but it would not be quick into being (most of our infrastructure and manufacturing capability would have to be rebuilt) not to mention that we have become spoiled by the variety of produce and goods available to us and would have to learn to live without much of what have become staples in our diets.

It would have to be for a couple of years to really see a collapse the larger countries economy's but it would happen. We also would be effected. We could see the gap between the haves and the have not grow significantly.

It wasn't really until WW1 that we got involved in the world scene and WW2 solified our position as the leader of the western world. If the USA pulled out of everything and went into total isolation, it is pretty much guaranteed that we will be pulled into WW3. History has a tendency to repeat itself.

As in, every single country in the world, without exception? Has it not occurred to you that this would hurt not only THEIR economies, but also our own? What good could possibly come from doing so? Why would you ask this question?
