This isn't exactly an answer to your question, but I have to tell it because it is closely related and SO weird...
I once taught with a guy who I never heard laugh once. He told jokes and tended to gravitate toward humorous people, myself included (ah, hem). Anyway, any time someone would say something funny, everyone would laugh except said gentleman. Instead, he would just say, "That makes me laugh!" Then, of course, he would just sit there not laughing.
One day I called him on it. Someone said something funny, and he said, "That makes me laugh!"
I said, "No, it doesn't."
Everyone looked at me as if I thought what was said wasn't funny.
I said, "You said that makes you laugh, but you didn't laugh at all. In fact, you always say something makes you laugh, but you never laugh. That's just weird."
Everyone started agreeing and saying, "Wow, you never do laugh! You just SAY you laugh!"
At this point, we were all laughing but him.
To this day, I don't know if he can laugh.
After reading your question, I wonder if "That makes me laugh" was his courtesy laugh. Hmm...

Yes, I have a courtesy laugh. To me, it seems quite stilted in comparison to my genuine laugh. Actually, I don't worry that others will notice the difference because I only use the courtesy laugh with strangers, who certainly do not know my courtesy laugh from my genuine laugh. With friends who tell a bad joke, I use my "for-friends-only courtesy laugh" which, in turn, makes my friends laugh because they can tell I am just being courteous.

I think that when most people laugh its a 'courtesy' laugh. Think about it how many time do we actually laugh because something is truly funny?

I worked in customer service for 5 years. I have mastered my courtesy laugh to a fine art. Customers tell the stupidest jokes.

Yes-And sometimes I am embarassed to say that I have one. But I'd rather have a courtesy laugh than be rude to people.

Mine's pretty noticeable too. It doesn't help that I add in, "Oh now that's a good one", every time.
