Because one leg is longer than the other.
Because we are creatures of habit and when we see the choice to turn left or right, we choose to make the same decision for subconcious reasons.
Because someone who can walk in a straight line wouldn't get lost in the first place, i.e. they are in a group more likely to walk in circles in general.
Because you asked this question in mythology and folklore, and it wouldn't make a very interesting story if someone found their way out.

Lost people instinctively turn toward their dominant hand and in most cases will head downhill, hopefully toward water. Children, on the other hand, will do just the opposite, believing they can see from the top of a hill, and that their dominant side is steering them wrong. Because there is usually nothing with which to orient oneself, the person hikes in one direction and then thinks that isn't right and changes the path slightly, and that usually alters the entire trip into a rough circle.

Well you have no idea that your walking in a straight line, its almost impossible unless following a....straight line. Because, one leg/step is stronger then the other. So you will eventually make a huge circle. So take that to the bank little red riding hood.

It's because when you tied your scarf to a tree, your right leg got caught in it.

Seriously,
I think it's because we tend to turn the same way when given alternate ways to choose and we end up where we've begun unless we are following a river or something that we know travels in one direction.

ONLY those who are unworldly get lost. Never heard of a Native American, the Forestry Commission, or Amazonian Indians doing such things.

Its because one leg is more developed than the other, not longer. But keeping a straight course isn't difficult, you just have maintain your focus. Most people panic, and start wandering aimlessly.

I've been wondering this myself for quite sometime!
The first reason I heard is that your one leg (usually the right one) is longer than the other. The other reason is that your legs aren't qually strong.
