Why do we try to find stuff out about outer space. I mean we spend billions of dollars that we paid the government and they use it to try to find life on another planet. They found life on a planet billions of light years away so what good does that do. If aliens want to find us that is fine by me but we shouldn't try to find them cuz it is useless.

And also about the war in Iraq. It's stupid isn't it. Ever since that started gas prices started going up. Bush should just bring everybody back. If Iraq attacks us then we should nuke them or something. Or if Bush leaves our troops over there they should use Iraq's gasoline.

Please answer both or just one. These are serious problems.

countries are getting over populated. how do you think we could reduce that?

and the tobacco company isn't doing anything to stop "whatdafxup" because they know they can't be beaten. what if we get a petition to stop them from making tobacco because the smoke from cigarettes and cigars are helping with global warming.

I agree 100% with you about Iraq. But not with regard to the space program--here's why.

Our research in space covers a wide range--from basic science (like the planetary astronomy you menttioned) to straight-line technology R&D.

The technology research has--and continues--to pay for itself many times over--something you can't say about most government programs! Here's a few of the direct benefits we--and you, in one way or another--benefit:
--Weather satellites that save crops and lives--not to mention giving us better weather forcasts
--medical technology--most of the sophisticated tech hospitals use to day had their start at NASA
--safer and lower cost aircraft
--the base of our modern computer technology--there would be no Internet without that research.

But--the way science and technology work, you need both. Basic science is the starting point--and there is no way to predict specific technological p applications. But that's the base furture technological progress has to have. WEather satellites started as pure scientific resrearch--as did all that medical technology we now enjoy and that saves tens of thousands of lives every year.

I can't say what practical use there will be for the current basic research efforts. Some will not have any--though they will add to our understandinng of the universe we live in. Others will have payoffs down the road in hard dollars and cents. But there's no way of telling which is wich at this point.

Here's an example from the history of scence to show you what I mean. In the 1800s a scientist named Michael Faraday came up with a gadget he used to show that a maget could be turnned inside a wire coil and produce an electric current. Someone asked him what use it might have. Faraday hadn't a clue how his device--purely a research tool to him--might have any practical use--his response was "Of what use is a newborn baby?"

That "newborn baby" was the electric generator--the single most important device in the entire power industry. Without it we would have no electricity--no lights, no air conditioning, no computers, phones, TV. Not even cars--they each have a small genrator to provide electric power.

So don't dismiss that "impractical" scientific research. Somewhere in all the scientific reports and findings someone will find the next electric genrator--or cure for some disease--or new energy source, etc.

I think you are simplifying the purpose of the NASA Space Program. Many experiments and research are carried out on missions and has led to new products and techniques that we now use on earth.

Kidney dialysis machines were developed as a result of a NASA developed chemical process that could remove toxic waste from used dialysis fluid.

As a medical CAT scanner searches the human body for tumors or other abnormalities, the industrial version, or advanced computed tomography inspection system, finds imperfections in aerospace structures and components, such as castings, rocket motors and nozzles.

A cardiovascular conditioner developed for astronauts in space led to the development of a physical therapy and athletic development machine used by football teams, sports clinics and medical rehabilitation centers.

These are just a few of the things that NASA research and technology have discovered. If you would like more take a look at these websites.

The war in Iraq is not the reason gas prices have gone up. It is however the excuse that gas companies use, among others, to justify it. The United States still pays the lowest prices for gas than most of the world. The gas companies want to change this and they are slowly doing that. When gas prices fall to $2.00 a gallon people are happy about it. They have successfully made paying $2.00 a gallon acceptable. But my memory is not that short. I remember paying $1.00 to $1.10 per gallon for gas. What happened to that price? It will never be seen in the U.S. again. The gas companies have no reason other than profit. They are making billions (this is after research and refining costs) and have convinced us that they HAVE to do it because of world events such as war, weather, etc.

Space exploration is interesting, but I agree, we spend far too much on it. But we can't have another country making a discovery the good ol' US of A should have made. It's all about competition, I think.

There are worse thing things that our tax money goes to, such as this useless war. I agree, the war IS stupid. The lady who said there are lots of things we don't know is right. For instance, Iraq was the reading capital of the Middle East. It was known for it's reading cafes where philosophical debates were a daily part of life. That is gone forever. Check out the attached article. What about the ancient city of Mesopotamia? What about the museums that have been pillaged, ancient artifacts destroyed? This would not have happened if the US didn't start bombing and killing and inciting inter-ethnic violence.

The US government does not care about Iraq or its people. The troops are doing no good there, as much as they want to think they are. They opened the wound, and they simultaneously want to be the salve. It makes no sense. War makes no sense. Innocent babies and children getting killed, for what? Get out of Iraq now!

Because humans are using the Earth's resources at an astounding rate, our scientists want to be able to use an alternate source if need be.

Iraq---as a wife of a soldier who's BTDT and a Moderator for a major website.....Bush CAN'T just 'bring everybody back'. Do your homework, research, talk to soldiers who have been there. There are many who are on their 2nd, 3rd, 4th tour there. Ask them why they don't retire, ask them why they think we need to continue to be there. Don't rely on the media for your information--certainly not CNN(which soldiers commonly call the Communist Network News).
There's a wealth of resources regarding this war. It started WAY before Mr. Bush was in office. Gas prices have been going up LONG before Mr. Bush was in office. Prices have been steadily going up for the past 2 decades, not just in the past 5 years.

Do yourself a favor---use the internet to do your OWN research. Make decisions for yourself, don't allow yourself to be spoonfed.

The job must be seen thru. My husband has a job to do that he voluntarily signed up to do many years ago. Regardless of what the personal beliefs are, the job comes first.

okay...hi. i think its partially useless to be searching space. mostly because even if we do come accross something amazing...its freaking lifetimes away from us. but i do see a positive to it. there could be far greater advanced lifeforms and imagine the possibilities!

now, the iraq thing. i think george bush is useless. i'm agains nuking the whole place because there are many many innocent people there. and there are terrorists everywhere, not just in the middle east. i think the whole war is pointless, we cant stop them.
