In Pan's Labyrinth, is the fantasy world Ofelia enters all in her head (as an escape from her uncomfortable reality) or is it real? I've come to my own conclusions, just wondering what others think.

Well...it depends. When Ofelia's step dad the captain came into the labyrinth and saw Ofelia, he only saw her and not the faun, making it imaginary. But when she had that weird root under her mom's bed, she saw it (then burned it witch killed her) The movie leaves you wondering what really happened so you have to come to your own conclusions. I think the material items where real but the kingdom was different. It was a state of mind. Or my friend had a good conclusion. Because Ofelia belived so much in the labyrinth, it could have been her own version of heaven (say you create your version of heaven) She died at the end but went to either heaven or another realm.

Yes, I think it was real.

Think about the mandrake root. If Ofelia made up the entire story, and the faun didn't exist, where would she get the mandrake root? The root definitely did exist because the captain and her mother saw it. And could it be just pure coincidence that her mother went into labor and died in childbirth right after the mandrake root was thrown into the fire?

Personally, I think the mandrake root was a big hint into whether or not the story was real or just made up in Ofelia's head.

I think tjey're really things... but the worl can only be seen by Ofelia beacuse she's naive and inocent. Rest of the people is focused on the real world and they don't have time to think in other things. Wondreful movie by the way.

as much as i'd like to believe that it was real, i think it was just Ofelia's way of escaping reality. her over-active imagination made her survive the most difficult part of her life.

the ending might have been harsh but at least, deep in her heart, she was happier in that fantasy world than in her real life.

For the movie's sake - I think it was real because there were tangible things (like that root under the bed that the stepdad found and the mother burned).

Excellent movie though it was a bit more graphic at times than I expected.

Personally I don't think it's real. I think it was all just in her head. It's a wonderful film though, and the ending really upset me.

I think it's all in her head. By the way, that was one of the most difficult movies to watch for me, what do you think?
