I got a ficas plant for my birthday (a month ago), and in the last week, it's started loosing a lot of leaves.

Is it getting too much/not enough sun? too much water/not enough water?

right now it's indoors where it doesn't get a lot of direct sun light, and I've been waiting until the dirt in it's pot is dry on top before I water it again.

any tips or advice would be great.

It really is a myth about moving them and them going into shock. Just think about how many times they get moved in a green house or in shipments.
I worked with them as house plants for years and now I live with them outdoors!

Guess what, in the dry season, they drop their leaves!
If you let it dry out in the house, the plant thinks it is going into the dry season and drops it's leaves.
The trick is to keep the soil EVENLY moist NOT wet, through the whole container, all the time.

Get a moisture metre and test your soil frequently - keeping the moisture level at meduim.

Your plant very likely was grown outdoors in a warm place like California or Florida and it is very likely pot bound - not much soil left in the pot, and thus will dry out very quickly.
Probably a real good idea to pot it up one pot size as this would make caring for it much easier - easier to manage with more soil on the pot.

PS. Don't forget to feed it now and then. :0)

all depend on how much water your giving it a week if your watering it daily if it is sun tolerant is it in the right pot do u move it around allot does it have root rot all depend on what you are doing first thing is try a bigger pot twice the size of the original one new dirt shake off all the old dirt make sure all of the old dirt is removed place in new pot with new soil that solution 1 2 is you take all the dead leaves look to see if the plant has any bug around it or has a funny smell it could has a fungus's from over watering again wiff that you would have to replace the soil solution number three you can call me Camille at landscapers ''r''us 718 703 89 11 an i can give ya the best way or know how or next you can come down to the neariest home depot an ask them what needs to be done

Ficus are notorious for dropping their leaves. Any time you move them into a different condition, they will lose a good portion of their leaves. I have several that I put outside every summer. They look great at the end of the summer, then start dropping leaves as soon as they come back inside. They always leave back out, so it's nothing more than just a pain in the butt to clean up the leaves.

Make sure the plant doesn't have scale. They are very susceptible to it and it's a real pain to get rid of, even worse if you're inside.

I'm not sure off the top of my head about the watering situation with ficus plants, but I know that they don't like to be moved and will go into "shock" for awhile once they're put in a new place. I would look it up online to see how much they like to be watered and how much sun/light they like and then put it where it's going to be try not to move it much.
