There are many reasons why I consider buying a laptop:
1-My CD burner doesn't work anymore, so this laptop would solve this problem.
2-My desktop-PC doesn't have a DVD-burner, the laptop does.
3-I also don't have a DVD /reader/, and, of course the laptop does.
4-My computer makes too much noise, I feel like in a factory, it makes so much noise, I mean, it's noisy.
5-My destop PC smells like... gas, and I fear respiration problems because of this.
6-It makes a terrible heat in summer, and, I'm in a... very hot location, it isn't comfortable in summer over here.
7-I don't need games and stuff on my computer, I only browse the web, view photos, and burn CDs, listen to music...
8-A laptop would be easier to transport (to the reperator) if it crashes or something.
9-It has more hard-drive memory, more perfomance, and Windows Vista.
It is, btw a Toshiba Satellite A100-335, so it's a bit pricey, and another contra-point is that I don't get out of my house with it. So what do you thi

1-3. CD/DVD burners that you can easily install yourself are available for less than $50. A DVD burner will burn CD's as well as read any DVD you put in it.

4. Desktop computers don't have to be noisy, you can buy/build systems with low-noise level fans.

5. PC's don't don't emit fumes unless something is burning. Are you sure what you're smelling is the computer?

6. A laptop will heat you up faster than any Desktop when it's burning up on your lap

7. Laptops have crappy speakers for listening to music.

8. True.

9. You can get a more powerful desktop PC for cheaper than a laptop.

A laptop is a great and convenient device to own, but
I wouldn't spend more than $500 dollars for a new laptop if all you want to do with it is burn DVD's/CD's, listen to music, view photos and surf the web. Windows XP is still just as good as Vista, and probably better until the rest of the software world adapts to Microsoft's latest operating system.

If mobility is not top on your list, then DON'T buy a laptop.
If you will be spending long hours on your PC, DON'T buy a laptop.
Just buy a good desktop PC. You would then not be buying the neck and wrist pains that go w/ long use of the laptop. Laptop has poor ergonomics and not good for extended use. It's a fad but also a health risk. Health/safety conscious offices provide a separate monitor and keyboard on a tray whenever the laptop of a field guy is used at the office.

Hey man, I custom build laptops and I would like to know if you would buy one from me. They would be a lot better than the Toshiba Satellite A100-335 and a lot cheaper.
Just let me know the target price, and Ill let you know what I can get.
Aslo, try to let me know the specifications you want ( weather you need good video or if you prefer ATI over nVidia, or Intel to AMD)

Thanks

A notebook might be handy to you, but it really depends on how old your desktop is, to see if you should even bother with upgrades. If you have a Pentium 3, it might be worth upgrading, as long as you get one of the 1.13GHz+ upgraded processors. I don't think people realize it, but most PC's with 1GHz+ have plenty of power, with the right upgrades. So it is really a matter of whether you're going to travel much. I think you should probably buy a new laptop, and keep your desktop as a Backup/Server. Most new laptops have more power than what most people need. The only real concern is getting a new one with Windows Vista. If you get one with Vista, you're going to want 1GB+ ram. That Toshiba seems kind of pricey for what you are going to need. Here's what I suggest. If you want Vista, get Home Premium, so you get the most out of it.

If you really want Vista, get this:

I recommend this notebook, as I have one and I am very pleased with it:
