I went for my 39 week appointment Monday and doc did first exam on cervix for dialation. He said I was dialated about the size of a fingertip (I am guessing that's about 1) and that I had a long cervix. What does that mean? Will the delivery be more difficult? More painful? I am not due till Wednesday but he is inducing me on Sunday. Just wondering if this is all normal or if I should be worried. He didn't seem worried but I am just wondering...

I didn't ask to be induced, he just decided. I think the baby's measurements play a part. Also its really hard to put up a fight when you are wearing the paper blanket that is not meant for pregnant women!

Chances are you will need cervical ripening before they can induce. This would be done with either prostaglandin gel, Cervadil (like a tampon string) or Cytotec, a tiny pill placed in the vagina.

A cervix that is long and hard will not dilate easily with a pitocin induction.

I too am curious why you are being inducted before you are due. Unless there is a medical reason (high blood pressure, large baby, etc.) most docs wait until at least 41 weeks before talking about induction.

Only your doctor knows for sure what he meant by "long cervix". Ask him. It's possible that he was referring to your level of effacement...that is how thin your cervix is. Before labor, the cervix is fairly thick and sort of shaped like a donut. Once you start labor, the cervix does 2 things....it starts to "dilate" in preparation for passing the baby, AND it starts to "efface" or thin, also to ease the baby's passage. This happens during the 1st stage of labor, although you can have some degree of dilation and effacement that occurs prior to active labor. If you are 1 cm dilated and have no effacement, it means that you are not real close to active labor at this time. Please bear in mind that these 2 signs can and do occur quickly, though. You can see the doctor, be 1 cm and no effacement, and later the same day, you can be 8 cm with full effacement...babies and labor are unpredictable. Hope this helps.

The measurements and concern of your cervix has not something to do with once you will bypass into hard artwork. Sorry. that is been shown to not be of any help or guidance to the two mom or caregiver to do an examination and checklist concern of cervix. you could walk around for weeks dilated to 3 or 4cm's and then, bam, dilate to eight in a rely of hours and furnish in a million hr. some women folk do not dilate until the very final minute earlier hard artwork starts off. some women folk dilate particularly quickly as quickly as hard artwork starts off, and then get 'caught' at 6 or 7cm's for hours. that is particularly not a precursor to while hard artwork will commence. I lost my mucous plug merely approximately 3 weeks earlier my water broke... so as that's not a solid indication the two, in spite of the undeniable fact that it 'many times' capacity hard artwork would be right here interior of a few days to three weeks. merely understand that your physique is conscious what to do, and issues are working in there even once you do not experience them. you're making progression. Your toddler will come while he/she is waiting, and on occasion it merely takes longer. solid success!

A long cervix just means it isn't really ripe yet and labor could be a ways off.
May I ask, why are you being induced early?
