Do NOT turn the firewall of. Set the exception for file and printer sharing in the firewall. Both machines should be in the same workgroup. Create shares on any folders you wish to offer by right clicking the folder and turning the sharing on. Do NOT expose the whole drive, or the system folders, this is the fast way to get your system trashed in a network. If his machine is Vista he will need to go to tcp/ip properties and advanced. Then select the wins tab and turn on always use netbios over tcp/ip, turn off use lmhosts.

If he right clicks on My documents and properties and checks the boxes marked sharing - then you can go to my network places and make my documents on his PC a network place that is shared. You can usually browse for the shred place in XP. A shared place on my laptop is \\LAPTOP\SharedDocs . Each computer has to have a name - my laptop is called laptop and my desktop is called desktop. I keep things simple! lol
