I am currently nursing my five month old son.. I am a very busy mom with 4 little people in the house and I find it hard most days to make sure that I am getting enough calories... I drink a lot of water, juice and milk and have breakfast and dinner everyday but some days I miss lunch. I AM not having any problems with producing milk... and my son is developing just fine.. he is gaining lots of weight, he is 18 pounds and in the 97 percentile.
Due to illness I was very underweight before I got pregnant and am hoping to keep some of the weight now.

If I am not getting enough calories every day what kinds of problems can I expect if any?

Not having enough energy to chase around those 4 little people!

Seriously, any time you feed your kids a meal or a snack, feed yourself. Even if you have to eat it standing up at the kitchen counter.

Keep quick and easy to grab snacks around. Buy veggies and fruit to snack on. Granola bars or cereal bars. Grab a spoonfull of peanut butter when you have a spare minute. Or make a whole loaf of PB&J, put it back in the bag and keep it in the fridge. Drink smoothies or protein shakes. Eat a handfull of nuts or raisins.

Keep taking (or resume taking) prenatal vitamins, they will help (not with calories but with nutrition). As for calories, it is easier to drink your calories then eat them. Drink higher fat milk (if you can stand the taste) and add chocolate syrup etc. Add a pat of butter to your mac -n- cheese etc and add a few calories here and there. As for lunch, sit down with the kids, it is hard when you have a little baby but the five month old can nurse while you eat, or before or after, taking the time to sit down at the table with the kids, sends a powerful message about you as a person and your needs as well as making time to be with the family.

The effects should be on your body, not your childs. The body will take what it needs to produce the milk to the detriment of your own health, just like when pregnant. Try drinking smoothies or shakes high in nutrional value (like ensure). These will add not just empty calories for weight but the vitamins and minerals your body needs.

YOU will begin to lose weight, not the baby. The effects will be seen very much in yourself before him. Your body will take what it needs for him from itself even at your harm. You may be tired or start to lose too much weight...any other symptom a person usually has when they don;t eat enough.

Normally you should get about 2700 kcal per day to feed your baby well. Otherwise you may experience fatigue even after feeding your infant. And in time , it could even affect the amount of the mother's milk.
