First Michigan houses 107,000 seats vs Michigan State's 75,000; therefore getting more notoriety. MSU is traditionally the underdog, with a 28-66-5 record in the Paul Bunyan Trophy rivalry game. Honesty Michigan has better coaches in the past (Bo Schembechler and Crisler) that catapulted them into where they are now. Michigan State does have good players, but their coaching over recent years have been their demise. Because of scholarships and playing time Michigan State will eventually close the gap. I don't think these programs are that far apart anyway. Michigan State needs some help and Michigan is like ND in that they suck year in and year out and are still ranked in the top 25!

Because the best football recruits like heading to winning organizations. That means football teams with legacies. The two teams with football legacies in the Big Ten are OSU and Michigan. They may have good coaches, but it's going to be a lot easier for those coaches to recruit better players due to the school's name and the fact that they send more players to the NFL. If you were a player, which would you rather play for? Michigan which was number 2 in the nation for about half the year or Michigan State which was unranked for most of it?

Good coaching and reputations. Michigan has earned both. Look at Michigan State they always have talent, not Michigan talent but still good. They could probably be a Wisconsin or Iowa type team. Always competitive and every 5 or so years have a really strong team but usually just sorta hang out around the top 25. They usually have poor coaching and poor attitudes causing them to under achieve every year. Instead of going to some type of bowl every year and building up a better rep they start fast and then quit ending up with a losing record and no bowl.

Michigan is the more prestigous program, so they pull in better recruits, coaches etc..
However, there have been years that MSU has been dominant (1950's, 1960's), they are just not as consistent as U of M is.Recruiting is where is really hurts MSU. They have to search for recruits that U of M does not want. But sometimes those kids play with a chip on their shoulder. It is the reason the rivalry can get heated on the MSU side.

Michigan has the name recognition as a top flight football program. Many coaches worth anything will not come to compete for recruits against such long odds. That puts MSU in a dissadvantaged position right from the start. MSU would really like a top flight program, it's just hard to compete against a legacy that Michigan has. In other terms, Michigan will never again compete regularly against MSU in basketball just like MSU will not regularly compete against Michigan in football for the same exact reasons. No one would want to recruit against Izzo for basketball....no one wants to compete against Michigan in football.
