Go to Crucial.com and plug in a few specs, it will tell you what RAM you'll need

The "company" or brand is not an issue. You can mix brands without any problem. You just have to be sure the new memory is DDR 400/333 memory (which is a type and speed of memory). You may want to open your computer and look to see if you have any open slots in which to place the new memory. If you do, you can add on to the existing 512mb by adding more chips. If you do not have any open slots, you will have to remove the 512mb to put in the new memory before adding the new. So you will have to buy a larger amount of memory.

RAM has also clock speed from 33 MHz to 667 MHz. It depends on system motherboard what it will support. If your mother board supports 300/400 MHZ than you should go for 400 MHz also called PC 3200. Download Everest Home Edition, install. When ever you run it, it will give you the full detail of hardware & software as well. Simply purchasing another RAM & insert in m/b will not work Ask vendor to purchase your RAM & give you single RAM of 1GB & pay the differece of amount.

Pc3200 is the same as DDR 400. where as pc 2700 is the same as DDR 333.
you will want to get Pc3200 (ddr 400) and get 2x 512mb sticks as your motherboard might support dual channel which is faster/more efficient than single channel meaning you have 2 different size pieces of ram in your system ex..256/512. so go for 2x 512mb sticks of ram.

Adding one 1 GB DDR or adding two 512 MB DDRs have their own pros and cons, on one side if u add two 512 MB DDRs you reduce your memory slots twice as compared to the other option, but reliability increases if one DDR goes usless at some point of time, you still have 512 working.

very simply go to www.crucial.com and run their online scanner. It will tell you what you have, how much room you have to add more, and what you need to purchase for an upgrade to add more memory. Takes the guess work out of it. Other memory companies have scanners as well, but I rely on the crucial.com one.

You just might want to check. Don't get the cheap inexpensive ram. It's your computer and give it the best.
