Each battle caused each side to lose resources (men and material). If the Axis side won the battle, the outcome of the war was delayed. If the Allied forces won the battle, the war was shortened. If you want a list of each of the hundreds of battles and each ones effect, that would require one or more books. Too much for this site's space.

battles are fought for specific areas which are of economic importance, areas of strategic importance or for the purpose of destroying enemy forces

for example the battle of the Atlantic was fought to secure free access to the sea transport- once the germans were defeated there, the allies could bring as many troops and materials to whatever place they needed- and the nazis had to build defences in more places (which means wasted materials in the areas which are not going to be attacked)

You would have to examine each and every battle to see the purpose why it was fought. In the end the whole purpose is to destroy the enemy's production capacities and armed forces to the point where they have to surrender.
