When doing research, you have a null hypothesis and an alternative hypothesis. Each one is the opposite of the other (something like p>30 and p is less than or equal to 30. You conduct your research, perform the statistics tests, and your results show which one is true. You then reject one of the hypotheses. The hypothesis is the theory that you want to prove or disprove. Your theory can be anything, and you use your data to see if your theory is correct.

Example:

1.) Greater than 75% of Morehead students are familiar with stem cell research.

H0: p ≤ .75
H1: p > .75

At a 5% level of significance (α=.05) the p-value is .876. Since p > α we do not reject the null hypothesis so there is insufficient evidence to support the claim that over 75% of Morehead students are familiar with stem cell research.

2.) Greater than 50% of Morehead students feel that stem cell research should be legalized.

H0: p ≤ .5
H1: p > .5

At the 5% level of significance (α=.05) the p-value is .014. Since p < α we reject the null hypothesis. There is sufficient evidence to support the claim that over 50% of Morehead students feel that stem cell research should be legalized.

3.) Religious issues affect fewer than 50% of the student’s views on stem cell research.

H0: p ≥ .5
H1: p < .5

At the 5% level of significance (α=.05) the p-value is .274. Since p > α we do not reject the null hypothesis. There is insufficient evidence to support the claim that religious issues affect fewer than 50% of student’s views on stem cell research.

4.) More than 50% of Morehead students consider themselves to be pro-life.

H0: p ≤ .5
H1: p > .5

At the 5% level of significance (α=.05) the p-value is .115. Since p > α we do not reject the null hypothesis. There is insufficient evidence to support the claim that more than 50% of Morehead students consider themselves to be pro-life.

5.) Greater than 50% of Morehead students feel that using stem cells in research is okay as long as abortion is legalized.

H0: p ≤ .5
H1: p > .5

Hypothesis implies that it is a theory not a fact... so if your research has no actual scientific data then you must make the reference that it is in theory and not in fact.

It is the question that you are asking to be true or not. It's kinda like this is what I have found out to be true and this is the final answers that say if it is true or not. So you've got all your information together and now you are testing the information to see what happens and to see if the output you believe to be true is indeed true or not.

it is the theory or reason you are doing the research or experiment.
