Yes, during an extreme electrical storm it is dangerous. We have a light/electrical post at the corner of our front yard, and it was once hit. We had a portable phone and it got cooked. We heard a crackle and pop and later we pried it open and the innards were completely melted.
Don't know if anyone has died that way, but I'm betting it's happened.

Yes,Reader's Digest had a story of a woman 3-4 years ago who picked up the phone as she heard thunder rumble in the distance. It struck the phone lines down the road, and zapped into her ear and killed her.The PBS show NOVA had a documentary on lightning researchers and how elusive the strikes are.Try their website, they usually archive past shows.Weather.com is the most useful place I know to look.

Actually yes. The mythbusters did a test where they built a mock room and zapped it with artificial lightning and anyone on the phone would have been cooked.
