I have a 89 Honda Accord DX. Yesterday I found a broken vacuum line so I replaced it and my car started running better but then I cut it off for it to never start on its own again. the selinoid was clicking and according to the repair book it said that the starter was bad. anyway I jumped it instead and it started right up, but as soon as you disconnected the battery the dashboard lights was dimming in and out and the moter was loosing power and gaining power like off and on off and on thingy. so everyone said my alternator was bad I'm getting tired of working on this car trying to fix things that are not bad, so can the alternator make it seem like all the conditions that the starter is bad, I know its not the starter because it started up after a jump.

the proper way to check an alt is take a voltage reading with the car running. should read 13.5 to14.5 volts. if not then alt if does then battery. not the best thing to disconnect a battery with car running as it will create a spark and it is possible that the battery can explode. but this very rare.

It does indeed sound like a charging system failure that you are describing. Fully charge the battery, start the engine, check voltage at the battery with engine running. Voltage should be 13.5~15.0 volts (14.2v is ideal). If not, the charging system isn't functioning, likely the alternator or regulator. You can then have the alternator bench tested at any reputable parts store before actually purchasing a replacement.

I think you should start at your belts and see they are tight and also your earth lead to your battery and the leads to your starter.~~
