I wouldn't say it's necessarily taking over diner culture. It's just that fine dining gets the press. I love podunk diners. They serve better food than some fancy places. That, and my theory is that as people age, they think they're too good for diners and "I can afford better than when I was in college!" Doesn't mean the food is any better or worse. I've been to some nice restaurants and it was crappy and I'd rather have an omelet from the truckstop.
