Whose debt was it? The church's debt? The pastor's debt?

What did the debt consist of? Personal loans? The cost of trips to Bermuda? Educational loans so he and his family could be educated? What he spent for expensive cars? Heaven help us, I hope it wasn't gambling debts.

If he contracted on behalf of the church and the church benefited thereby, the church may be liable. However, if the church council, trustees, or whatever governing body did not approve of the debt, I doubt that they may be obligated to pay. There is more information that you could have given us on this question other than pastor's debt, does the church have to pay?

if a ceo dies and leaves 1 million in debt, does the company have to pay? Heck no, if HE owes it. If the CHURCH owes it and he signed for the Church, then they pay it.

Whomever owes the money owes the money.
