Yes, any country that has gone the other way has been manipulated by Radical Islam groups.
Religion and Politics do not mix, like oil and water.
The radicals only enjoy support from the brain-washed mass unemployed, and uneducated working (less) classes, But in a secular state such as Turkey where many of the people have lived and worked in Germany since 1950, they see a beter chance for living, than under religous domination.

If it ever wants the door open to EU membership, then most definitely it should remain secular. If it ever wants to improve its economy, yes it should. An established Islamic state will only turn the clock back to the old Ottoman ways.
