If I am walking down a big city street and saw someone crying I would not rush up and hug....cause they may be wielding a knife..I might ask if they need help or if there was something I could do to help. Yet, if I were in a support group and a person I didn't know was crying I would hug them.

depends how approachable they are. If they look like they could do with a hug and are friendly, then yeah I would give them one. I would definately give a stranger a hug if they asked for one and are crying.

If there is a stranger very much in need of attention:i'll talk to them first:find out what the problem is.
Try to look for a solution
I am very much a people person.
And if necessairy:i'll hug them,no problem.

Often times, yes. It's hard to pass anyone who is unhappy. There may be something seriously wrong or they may just need that hug. :o)

no not really. if he/she was just sobbing quietly i'll leave them to do that. if hysterically crying then i'll have to do something. i've cried hysterically in public and some stranger asked me if i was alright. that meant a lot to me.

I don't know if they would be comfortable with a hug, so I would probably just pat their shoulder..

No, in my neighborhood, there are tons of rapists, and no time to risk it and take a chance to act that way.
