According to Jane Austin, Mr Bingley had a fortune of "four or five thousand a year". Taking inflation etc into account, how much would he be worth today?

I've based this calculation on the sum of £4,500.00

£144,765.00 for the year 1800
£152,820.00 for the year 1810

It's from this site:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/currency/results.asp#mid

And from pounds, shillings and pence to US dollars:

$287,213.82 (1800)
$303,194.95 (1810)

They were not farmers or business men, really. They had money in the bank, and they lived off of the interest. It's what all "gentlemen" did back then. You did not work unless you were lower class. In the book, do you remember when it says that Mr. Darcy has $10,000 year? That means that he draws that much money in interest from his principal amount in the bank. The thing is, though, $10,000 was literally like a million dollars back then, so it's quite wealthy. Especially when you consider that they didn't really have a lot of bills to pay. As for Jane's personality ... have you never known someone who was different from their family? I know I have.

Dunno.
But I know someone has said Mr Bennet would need to have half a million these days to kit his daughters out like that.

Given a date of 1810, and a flat £5,000 the site below gives £260,502.38.

In dollars about $514,114

Don't forget, that's his INCOME not his fortune. His fortune would've been huge.
