Are there any legal requirements i should be aware of in holding such a competition. It would be totally free for them to enter, they would just fill in their details on a form and hand it in to the shop.
(Preferably someone with legal knowldege)
Thanks

If its a free prize draw then the Lotteries and Gaming act doesn't strictly apply. If you're collecting peoples name and addresses then you should be registered under the Data protection act, especially if you intend to contact them in the future. If so, you need an "opt out" box for them to tick on the entry form.

If there's no fee to enter and no obligation to buy anything, it's allowed principally.

I don't know the laws of your place - but the form for the details should either have a remark "details only used for competition" or the possibility to tick "I do not wish any promotion".

Competitions /contests which do not collect any entry fee/processsing charges does not fall under "lottery".Sales promotion contests also are legal(provided there are no concealed entry fee).Free contests does not attract any legal sanctions.
Tax liability of the winner falls on the winner as per local laws.Cost of gifts may be written off as expenses in your shop's accounts.
