Rain is generally preceded by a drop in the barometric pressure. The lower pressure affects a cow's digestive system so this puts the cow off its feed, and it doesn't feel like grazing.

They are just tired, they would have been sitting down (at the time you saw them) whether it was raining or not.! Cows do not like the rain and will shelter from it,under a tree if they can. I have a `pet` cow who is fortunate to have her own `house` which she shares with the goat; when it rains they both make a dash for `home` and stay there until the rain has stopped.

Cows cannot feel changes in air pressure any more than you can. Cows often lie down when they are chewing the cud, they stand to eat grass. Cows chew the cud regularly during the day. The cows most people see are dairy cows rather than beef cattle. Dairying requires good rainfall. Consequently, there are often cows lying down when it is raining or when it is about to rain but it has nothing to do with the weather.

Sorry, that's a myth. If it were true, then all cows would lie down in the rain. So either half of them are confused or they're too dumb to know it's raining.

this is a sturdy question and benefits a severe answer.....for once in my existence. in case you check out a cow's legs, to the bare eye they look very resembling yours, or mine in that they look a flesh lined bone encased in epidermis. less than the microscope although, the state-of-the-artwork yet all important transformations are made sparkling. The cow's leg is unquestionably a micro-porous structure. It has the skill to take up large parts of moisture very right away. at the same time as rain is coming near near, the relative humidity stages develop, subsequently the air is holding much better moisture. therefore, the cows legs take up this moisture and, as with maximum elements at the same time as soaked in water, start up to melt. finally, sufficient moisture will be absorbed to melt the cow's legs previous the point the position they can nevertheless help the burden of the cow, and it would want to don't have any selection yet to lie down in simple terms in the previous this aspect, or cave in. presently after this time, relative humidity stages will attain the point the position rain will start up to fall. 'carry on' I listen you're saying, 'i have considered cows crossing streams, or status in boggy floor. clarify that away Mr smart-clogs!' nicely, my chum, the reason lies contained in the nature of micro-porous elements. at the same time as the cow's legs are fairly absorbent of moisture at a microscopic aspect, macroscopic parts of water will be washed immediately over the legs in a lot an same way that dry baked floor, at the same time as being absorbent, will enable a heavy downpour to run off the exterior fairly than soaking in.

Nature's instinct ;
if lightening is taking place with the rain-showers then it would be wise to take cover and make one's self small by laying down in the pasture so not to get hit by lightening outdoors.
seems to me that most hoofed animals lay down during rain-showers or maybe my Alzheimer's is acting up again

As my learned colleague above states the change in pressure makes them lay down, but they also lay down when it's about to get sunny too. Plus some are more sensitive to pressure than others, hence some don't lie down
