This is something that I ponder every month, when I'm curled up on the couch with a hot-water bottle, waiting for my panadine to kick in >.<

The cramping is being caused by the uterus trying to push out the lining that built up during the month in preparation for a pregnancy because it was no longer needed that month.

Another good medicine to try (but you'll have to get a prescription from your dr for it) is called Ponstel. It's been around for years and years. I was introduced to it about 10 years ago and it works well. The secrete to it's effectiveness is to take it about 3 times a day for 3 days before your period actually starts. When I took it just that way I had no cramps for the entire period.

Another thing that I found helpful is to increase the level of iron I take in at that time. I do it by eating things like spinach, raisins, peanut butter (if not allergic to peanuts of course). You can find out more about other foods that are good for iron by going to the following website: http://www.nutrition.about.com

You will find that information in the section listed: "Vitamins and Minerals".

But definitely please talk to your dr again about these cramps to find out if something like endometriosis could be going on.

i agree with previous answer about iron, it really helped me. Forget paracetamol, it's no match for period pain. Break out the big guns!!! Ibuprofen is a good painkiller. The key is to take it on the first day, at the first sign of pain, so you nip it in the bud - i read this years ago and it really works. Take painkillers all day on the first day (however many hours apart the label says), and you probably won't need them for as many days after that. works for me!

not sure but piss the panadeine off and try a pill called buscopan. it's an anti spasmodic and it works a million times better than anything else :-)
you made me curious...just looked it up and the only reason anyone can come up with is reduced blood and therefore oxygen to the muscle wall of the uterus during menstruation
