I've always gone by my dad's saying "necessity is the mother of invention."
so i figure with your question, it's just a round circle. when you need something done, you invent a way to get it done. this leads to thinking about your options and figuring out what the most efficient way of doing something is.
it's along the same line as "which came first, the chicken or the egg?" each one leads to the other.

We by nature always learn by apperception. We learn by what we already know. In my personal capacity as a registered patent owner both in the Philippines and USA, I invented because I saw the problen need. So I try to discover what is the best solution to minimize atmospheric pollution caused by the growing combustion engines running in the streets and hi-ways, in big cities and urban places. And there I got my own ideas serendipitously
