If we're talking about a brand new tank, the manufacturer of the tank has already provided the needed microbial agents to begin the breakdown of solids into effluent. Do not under any circumstances add any chemicals of any kind to your system. If you feel you must add something, throw a handful of raisins into the toilet once every few months and flush, or one small packet of yeast does the same thing. Once established the bacteria inside your tank won't need any help in achieving the results. Be sure to have your septic tank pumped at least once every three to five years depending on the number of users in your household. Then and only then is it needed to add some more raisins or yeast to re start the microbial process.

You don't need to.

A septic tank will be big enough to allow the bacteria to start way before it gets quarter full.

Lived in the country for over 40 years and never heard of anyone having problems with this process not starting by itself.

You can get proprietary biological preparations which are added to the toilet flush - in France we use a preparation called Eparcyl, one sachet each week. Works beautifully. As long as your system has a method of discharging the treated water you may not ever need to empty the tank.

We are currently having a new tank installed and will charge it with Eparcyl when it's ready.

The one that works best is the Septiclear Super Pack Bacteria. In the States you can find it at True Value Hardware. I've tried other bacteria and they seemed to have died while still on the store shelf. The Septiclear cost $14 it was alive and active, it sure beats paying $6 for a dead bacteria.

The reason you want the bacteria is to make sure the wastes do breakdown properly. You don't want a clogged drain field.
