Suppose -- hypothetically -- that Francisco Elson and James Jones looked like they were about to get into a fight, and at that moment Tim Duncan walked on the court and took a few steps toward the players. Further, suppose that Bruce Bowen -- always a model of sportsmanship -- also came on to the court to pull Duncan back to the bench.

Under the rules, David Stern would have no choice but to suspend both of them, too, right? Oh, wait a minute....

Alice: Actually, my question was not so much hypothetical as sarcastic. It WAS the other way around, too. According to the rulebook, which David Stern claims he had to enforce without room for interpretation, Stoudemire, Diaw, Duncan and Bowen ALL should have been suspended. Of course, why Bowen was allowed to take part in Game 4 in the first place remains a mystery.

Tut: All of what you say is true but it doesn't explain why Duncan and Bowen weren't suspended for doing the EXACT SAME THING.

Tut's Edit: Yeah, Duncan does have a clean image. But really so does Stoudemire, aside from his well-founded complaints about Bowen. And next to Diaw, Mother Teresa looks like Hannibal Lecter.

The NBA dropped the hammer on Phoenix because the series between the Suns and Spurs was getting too chippy for their liking. Yes, Robert Horry was the instigator. The NBA doesn't care. They DO NOT want to see a brawl in a playoff game. I thought the Suns' suspension was unfair, but the league is still stinging from the fight in Detroit a couple of seasons ago. It's all about image at this point.

EDIT: Duncan won't be suspended for anything unless he throws a punch, or maybe brings a baseball bat onto the court with him. The Joey Crawford incident is still too fresh in Stern's eyes. I don't know why Bowen wasn't suspended. At least Duncan has a relatively clean reputation, but Bowen's been on the wrong side of a TON of incidents.

If this were the other way around then Suns fans would be ecstatic and Spurs fans would be screaming bloody murder.

But it wasn't the other way around, was it? This is getting so old. Get over it. Your team deserves better.
