Power Corrupts - and Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely

2007-05-16 21:31:13 · answer #1 · answered by kr_toronto 7 · 2 0

Politicians are usually corrupt because there is nothing good the government can do for anybody. An honest politician is likely to make a mess of things trying to use the government to bring about a utopia. Woodrow Wilson intervened in a war in Europe that was none of his business, inadvertently helping to cause the rise to power of Benito Mussolini and Adolph Hitler. The honest politician who wants to improve the economy is even more dangerous. When the government intervenes in the economy, it is even more destructive than when it attempts nation building, especially if it interferes in a critical area such as education or health care.

It is very rare when an honest politician is even able to run for a major party nomination for the executive position. Its happening in America with Congressman Ron Paul, who is honest and wants to reduce the size of government.

However, you should never trust a politician. The smartest and most talented people are usually in the private sector running their own business. Its far more profitable and far less hassle just to run a business.

Governments tend to get the leftovers. Here in the US, college students majoring in the bureaucracy have the lowest SAT (the college entrance exam) scores. After them are the people going into education because the school system in America is about as bad as it is possible to create and few people with ability want to work there. It shouldn't be any wonder that education levels tend to fall in America with each and every generation. Things are so bad that governments have been rigging test scores to increase so that they can prevent schools are improving, even though nobody at the fast food restaurants can even count change.

I don't believe it's just politics. I think that power breeds coruption. I think there are some powerfull people who try very hard to not be corupt, but still do whatever they want sometimes, because no one can stop them.
