Man = m
Woman = w

m+20 = 2w
m = 2w - 20
m = 2(w-10)

What do you mean by a man is marrying a woman when he is 3 times older?

If you mean she is 3 times older than him when she marries...
Then m = man at marrying age
w = woman at marrying age

m = 2w - 20 from earlier
m = 3w
0 = w - 20
w = 20

m = 3 * 20
m = 60

So he would be 60 and she 20 when they marry.

Did you mean to say "A man is marrying a woman when she is 3 times older."?

Somehow, through about a 3 seconds calculation I am getting a negative result, but anyway

First part gives you equation that m = 3w. [m is for man's age and w is for woman's age.]
Second part gives you m + 20 = 2w. Now, substitute the value for m from first equation into second equation giving you 3w + 20 = 2w. and solve from there for w. Then take that vaule and put it into w in the first equation giving you m = 3 (20) making m = 60 and w = 20.

Edit: just looked at Northstar's answer. Ah! missed the whole 2 (w+20) thing. that's where i messed up and got a negative result.

The most important answer to this problem is the value of mnw. mnw, in this instance, would be x* 10^7 where x is any integer greater than 1. mnw = man's net worth. C'mon a 20year old marrying a 60year old? Yeah, she loves him. Sure she does.

He is 60 she is 20. When she is 40 he will be 80 twice her age. I don't know about formulas or algebra. But I think this is the right answer, Glad I don't have to explain it to a teacher.

when the man is 60 years old he will marry a girl who is 20 years old (mans' age is three times the age of the girl) after 20 years the man will be 80 years and the girl will be 40 years (mans' age is twice the age of the girl)

Let the man's age= M years
Let the woman's age = W years

Therefore at marriage the relation between their ages is
M=3W.....................1

Now 20 years later their ages will be
M+20 and W+20
The relation is
M+20=2(W+20)
M+20=2W+40
M-2W=20
Putting the value of M from 1 we get
3W-2W=20
W=20

And from this the value of M is 60

Therefore, tha man's age is 60 years an the woman['s age is 20 years

Quite an extraordinary case!!!!

man : m
woman : w
their ages at now
3w = m
m + 20 = 2( w + 20 )
if we write first eqn in the second.
3w + 20 = 2w + 40
w = 20
if w = 20
3w = 3*20 = 60
he is 60 years old now!

Let
m = current age of man
w = current age of woman

m = 3w
m + 20 = 2(w + 20) = 2w + 40

Simplify second equation.

m = 2w + 20

Substitute into second equation.

3w = 2w + 20
w = 20

m = 3w = 3*20 = 60

The man is 60 and the woman is 20.

2007-05-17 05:10:58 · answer #9 · answered by Northstar 7 · 0 1

m = man
f = female
m = 3f
f + 20 = (20 + m) / 2
f = m / 2 - 10
sub into original equation: m = 3 (m / 2 - 10)
m = 3m / 2 - 30
-m / 2 = - 30
m = 30 x 2
m = 60
The mans age is 60 and so the females age is 20.
