I don't want to have to ask my dad AGAIN about my car, I want to take care of it myself, but I don't want to be charged way too much for getting new brakes. It's a 2003 Ford Focus if that makes a difference. Also, are the big nationwide brake places good to go to or find someone local?

Go to someone local.
Changing brakes is a fairly easy job. Any auto repair shop should be able to do it for you.

Big retail chain auto repair shops usually have a higher set price, because of their name.

Should costs you anywhere from $100-200 all around.

ask your dad to do the work for you and to charge you what he has to pay for parts ($40-60). Offer to help, and do it.

A pro can do a brake job all around in 30 minutes ($40 shop rate) and the job shouldn't cost more than $100 total, but most places will try to get $150+ out of you, and will 'see' several other things you need to have fixed 'right away'....

The basic job is pretty easy -- and the parts aren't very expensive -- but what you are really paying for is that the pro, if honest, will actually make sure that all the parts that need to be changed are changed...a judgment that most shade tree mechanics aren't prepared to make.

brake pads cost around 65 dollars for a decent pair.so thats 130 all up..To get a mechanic to do it,they will add labour to that.probably 150 bucks, plus they will drain the brake system and replace the fluid, charge you for that another 10 bucks, and some charge a fee to get rid of the old oil about 5 bucks. Then they might say that the discs need machining, highly unlikely,Plus whatever else they say is wrong. So add that up......expensive ey? seriously id get somone to help you or show you how to do it your self.its not hard ey..

You should only have to pay about 150 for the front and another 150 for the back. That should give you new pads, turn on the rotors, and if needed a bleed on the brake system.

it depends how bad the brakes are! if you need rotors then it is going to be about 100 per wheel, but if it is just pads then about 60 for front and 60 for back. i'm in southern indiana and that is the prices around here, but big o is pretty good but they do work on commision so don't be scammed!

Midas and Just Brakes will do the job for about $100 per axle. Thats about as cheap as it gets.
