I think the reason why the television "Jericho" was not popular because it was not realistic. I think that if it had elements of the movie "Threads" in the show it would have had another season. This was watered downed reality of nuclear war.

What I mean by realistic is the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust. Their would be not functioning cars because the EMP from the explosions would make them not functional and fuel would be scarce, Secondary, the fallout from the explosions from surrounding cities would contaminate the town.

People would be dying from fallout contamination at alarming rates.
