I like to change up my patterns. I use a plade pattern. This is made by mowin 12-6 and then 9-3 and then going 12-6 but only on the white stripes. So you'd do one line, then come around and do the next white line the same direction. I also do wave patterns, and circles. When doing circles, go around twice and then turn around. That way you'll get a dart board pattern. As for what some said earlier, any roller will work. I've used a drum used to flatten the ground. Most Simplicity mowers come with a composite roller on the back of the deck.It doesn't drag on the ground because that would damge the grass. I hope this helped

I mow the perimeter for 3 or 4 passes, then use an "S" pattern to mow the entire length of the remaining lawn. To get that real striped pattern, you need to have an attachment that is actually called a striper. It's a piece of wood, metal, or rubber that drags behind the mower and bends the grass in one direction.

I have a nice redbud tree in my front yard, sort of off-center. I start right there, and mow in a sprial out from the tree. It sort of looks like ripples in a pond, where the tree is the stone you tossed in. I have a large backyard, and I will do circular/spiral shapes there, too.
