I just had my roof done by a contractor. I had a guy from the company come in and gave me some quotes. One for $3530 (newer thicker) and $2930 (older stuff). He signed us up for the $3530 stuff and if I changed my mind I could call him back to change to the cheaper stuff. So, within a couple of days I called him and changed it to the cheaper stuff. I even asked him if I need to resign new paper work due to the different amount. He said I don't have to, he will take care of it. Well, now that the roof is done, I get the bill for $3530. I taked to him about it and he says he doesn't recall talking to me about it. What can I do? Thanks.

If you ended up with a thicker better roofing material you will be thankful for it later. Your roof will last a few extra years than it would otherwise. Because you made a change verbally there isn't much you can do. He didn't scam you because you did get the better stuff on the roof. If you get 5 extra years of roof life for the cost of the extra $600 it is surely worth it. 50 year shingles will only last about 25 years. Inexpensive shingles might only last 10 or 15. For the small price difference you probably will end up being very happy in the long run.

Pay the man and chalk it up to experience. Always get any business agreement in writing. By the way, The thicker shingles should last longer than the cheaper ones and are less likely to suffer damage in wind storms. Many people who buy the cheapest shingles they can find live to regret the decision.

Good luck with your new roof.

Report him to the Better Business Bureau, for one thing. That sounds like a scam to me.
And, hire a lawyer. Or, you can maybe take this to small claims court.
Wonder what Judge Judy would do to this guy?

You are stuck now. This is exactly the reason to get EVERYTHING in writing. You have no way to prove that you requested a change.
If anyone tells you you don't need it in writing, Insist! is is your only protection.

i would just stay with the roof that you got. it's only 600 bucks more, and it's a better roof. just chalk it up as a learning lesson to getting things in writing, and be thankful that you got a nice roof!!

He purposely scammed you. He knew that by you having signed the first contract and not another after changing your mind that legally you are stuck.

Unfortunately, not much.

There's nothing you can do about it. This is a ghood example about a "scam" you had time to check on it, is what you should have done. Get it in writting.
