From experience (and it really works)
The number one way is...
Sheer will power (happiness requires a major effort of will)
The number two way is...
Exhaust yourself daily with physical exercise (exercise releases endorphins that counteract depression)
The number three way is...
Find someone to love, and someone who loves you...(love also counteracts depression)
The number four way is...
Occcupy yourself with a hobby that keeps your mind busy on the hobby activity (so you avoid sitting still contemplating negative though spirals (which goes back to will power...learn to catch yourself starting a "negative" thought spiral that leads to more negative thoughts...counteract every negative thought with a forced "positive" or humorous thought spiral)
And the last way is...
Comedy...(keep the T.V. on Comedy Central almost all the time...Mad T.V., Saturday Night Live, Stand-up Comedy, Comedy Clubs, Humorous fiction, Funny Movies...
If you keep all of these things going in some degree all the time...
You'll kick depression's booty...!

Wow. What a question, really. I personally DO take medication as I have clinical depression. If your depression lasts for more than two weeks and is a occurs frequently, I would suggest contacting your doctor or a psychiatrist (your family doctor is probably a more comfortable option as long as you're not thinking about suicide). See a therapist, they can help. Find someone to talk to. If you are depressed for no reason, then medication is probably a good option - just because you take meds does not mean that you are a crazy...
write down all the reasons you have for being happy. Try to wake up in the morning and think of the good things you can do that day. Plan to go out and do things. Find a hobby that interests you. Read self-help books. Try to learn more about yourself. Don't search for happiness, because if you only search for it, you won't have it, as weird as it sounds and as challenging as it is, say to yourself (and yes, your mind will tell you that it is a stupid idea and that you can't possibly do it... but you can if you try) to be happy now. Be happy. that's how you kick it. Take interest in yourself... be interested. Get sun your body needs vitamin D to build seratonin - a lack of seratonin can/will lead to depression, and UV light gives you a lot of vitamin D. If you smoke or use tobacco... cut back or stop. Cut back or stop drinking while you are depressed.
But if you lack seratonin/norepinephorin(sp?) then medication is really the only way to go... it's a chemical thing; it's not your fault. Don't blame yourself for not being happy, you'll get through it. Try to hang out with close friends. Don't do anything rash, because life is worth living, even when it sucks.

We are prone to depression. Besides listless feeling, the occasion can extend to self-pity and very offending at times.
We are taking things too hard, and involving ourselves in problems of others. Off course, there are more than meets the eyes---the rudiments of depression. However, intimidation, work pressure, affair of the hearts, and loggerheads are criteria of depression coming our way. Moreover, depression can be devastating, possibly leading to suicide and mental anguish. In fact, there is no running away from depression. To live peacefully, we have to manage our lifestyles away from disputable issues. Live and let live is the norm for happiness.

Meditation. It is the surest and best way to get rid of Depression. It could just mean sitting in a comfortable position, closing your eyes and thinking about GOD. It is very difficult, and will take a lot of effort to learn and get used to it,but it is possible. Drop all other thoughts and just think about GOD.

~~~ The best way that I've found to fight depression is to jam with Bob Marley. He is so awesome. I love all of his beautiful Reggae music. My favorite is: " No Woman No Cry". But the best song to actually fight off the blues is......"Three Little Birds" The message of that song is... everything is going to be all right. It has a great tone to the music too. Makes you feel good. I recomend listening to all of Bob Marleys' music to everybody...depressed or not. Like I said, he is AWESOME! I love him. And I'm not depressed anymore, so there's your proof it works. ~~~
I am diagnosed with Depression. I spend my time at home. Sometimes, I force myself to get out of my house. I do not want my family to worry about me. I do not want to lose my friends too. So somehow, all these force me out to do things that are not common for depression people.
Hopefully, time will make things go away.
Loathe life for a few weeks, and then it gradually dies down enough that I can get on with wandering around aimlessly, loathing life and wondering why I don't just end it all and why I care about anything, and loathing myself.
I'm not very good at doing anything.
