It's chemical signals, in both cases, as I have heard, they communicate with "taste", and lay down chemical trails.

Ants communicate through scent. As they travel, they lay down trails. When you see a line of ants, they are following the trails laid down by previous ants. Touching each other's heads is a way to learn the scent of another ant.

Because they heard that human natural science documentary directors are looking for ant colonies that do that sort of thing. Actually, it is probably a chemical orientation exercise.
