Horror, I remember it as a kid, so if figure it was early 80's.

The scene was of a person sitting in a bottom of a closet, suffering a nervous breakdown, trying to scratch away at a lit lightbulb swinging from overhead.

...this sounds SO MUCH like one of the story segments in the 1979 anthology film, "Screams of a Winter's Night"; in the film, a group of young people get together in a secluded cabin in the woods, on a cold and blustery night. When things settle down, and the beer is flying fast and furious, they begin to go round circle, telling stories, the origins of most lie within the realm of urban legends. One story dealt with a group of college freshmen, who are challenged to stay the night in a haunted house. Confident they they will make it through the night unscathed, they begin to settle in; in the course of the night, one by one, each kid wanders off alone, having seen or heard strange lights or sounds. When the rest of them search for the missing comrades, they find them either dead or half crazed. One of the students is found in a closet (or very small room), circling below a single eerie green-colored light bulb, eyes maniacally fixed on the bulb, and his face is pitted with numerous (and fresh) scars, as he attemts to repeatedly grope feebly at the light....

...does THIS strike a familiar cord???

...unfortunately, the film has yet to see release on DVD, and the VHS tape has long been out of print (years ago, not realizing that the film was EVER released on video, I happened upon the tape in a used audio/video store).

It sounds similar to a scene near the end of Halloween (1978) where Jamie Lee Curtis is hiding in the closet as the killer tries to break in, turning on a hanging light.
