It looks like this has been asked a couple times, but I want to give you some boundaries.

First, I don't want the definition of government. I know that already.

Secondly, this question pertains to the purpose of the government created by the US Constitution.

Thirdly (and most important), cite any sources.

The purpose of government is several fold, but all of the reasons for gov't point in the same direction, but in no special order. One, defending the rights and liberties of citizens. Remember, our constitution doesn't 'grant' rights, it recognizes rights that would exist even without a constitution. When people say we have to 'give up rights', or that certain people must be deprived of exercising their rights without due process they miss the entire point. You 'can't' give up a right. A right, using the constitution's expression of art, is endowed to each individual by their 'creator'. Governments, in the civil sense 'direct traffic'. The point here is that no individual, combination or group can take advantage of another. The 'law' protects everyone, or at least it should. An effective gov't protects the phyisical boundries of the nation...something that seems to be currently lacking in our gov't. Ultimately, 'government', is 'the people'. It's not an alien presents. It's US.

The primary purpose of a government is to protect its people collectively against things from which we cannot defend ourselves individually; "to provide for the general welfare".

Tiger - In all my life, that's the FIRST time I've EVER heard that one. Do you have any cites for this novel piece of information or is this some kind of slick manipulation of a minor truth in an effort to imply something REALLY stupid like "It IS a xtian gummint, it IS it IS too!!!"
