You are a hero of mine for saying what Ive been thinking! I thought that I was the only one and I had doubt till now. Yes, Tim Duncan is really overrated. Your right, he misses FTs and disappears in the fourth. As for him not being noticed...LOL...hes big, boring and from what was mentioned is NOTICED. I notice it like the rest of the nation does of all these things. Sure, he doesnt draw attention to himself but thats it. There are comments made about Tim Duncan but other players actions, attitudes and plays overshadow what he does. Speaking of overshadowing...Is he a 3x champion? Yes. Was he the deciding factor or worthy of an MVP title? I dont think so. A good rebounder, team player? Who and why gets an MVP for that? He gets his free pass because his fellow teammates do more in every sense and therefore deserve more. He does deserve a pass from the media...there is nothing really interesting to report.

Because of what the first poster said and compared to the other two players you mentioned...
Kobe Bryant won championships with Shaq, but cannot lead the team effectively on his own. Dirk Nowtizki has never won a championship and as you can see this year, faded away when it counted most.
Duncan won a championship with David Robinson...but also won one without him while leading the team himself. Also, Duncan has never faded in the playoffs, he has always been consistent. He's not a highlight maker like the other two, but you know what? If i'm buidling a team, I want consistently good as opposed to occasional awesome. The championship rings speak for themselves.
ALso, Duncan is generally regarded as a nice guy. He never gets in trouble with the law, does bad things, cheats on his wife (or at least we don't know.) He seems reserved and never outspoken. That's another reason why he gets a free pass, because he doesn't bring attention to himselve with his behavior.

He IS held to the same standards. Theres not a time he goes to the line that the commentators don't point out his free throw woes. Goodness, in the finals against detroit when he was playing on one good leg and putting up "just" 20 and 10 a game the media was all over him for not carrying the spurs.

he doesn't get a free pass- he largely goes unnoticed. you're right on FTs, but can't really argue with 3 titles out of a strong conference. he is a team leader, not a finesse 3-point shooting passive 7-footer (a la Dirk), nor is he a me-first egomaniac with off-court issues (Kobe). he doesn't demand attention, so in turn he doesn't get a lot of recognition for his achievements. he's a boring dude who wins games. and looks like a brontosaurus.

They like him.
--He's articulate
--He's fundamentally sound
--He doesn't shoot at people at the strip club
--He stayed in school for four years and actually
got better
--He has championships (3)
He doesn't get the same criticism because he plays the game "right".
No one is perfect, damn.
