Because it gives us something to look forward too........whats the point of looking to the past, besides learning from your mistakes......which in the end still prepares you for the future.................life would be soo boring if we had nothing to look forward too

It is not that we should not think about the past. It is the question or relative weightage.

The past is over, there is no way we can change it. However, it has rich potential for learning - learning which can make our future better. Past can also give you a lot of courage. Suppose one has faced a lot of hardships in past, he will not be afraid of hardships anymore.

So, past is like our data bank. Our future depends on our learning from the past and maintaining the learnings.

Without remembering the past, every generation would be re inventing the wheels !!!

However, future is what we can change, as per our actions today. Therefore, our primary focus is on future. The past is only to give us relavent data for choosing the correct course of action.

In a way, past is useful for the future. But it is predominantly future that we are interested in.

It is good to think about your future, but it is not good to think solely about it. You look to your past to avoid mistakes you've already made. You look to your future to make sure you'll end up happy and comfortable, but if you're always thinking about the future, then there is no end.

Yes, think about your future. But most importantly, you should think of your now. If you don't have a today, how can you have a tomorrow?

We should remember the past, but it is also important to prepare and plan for the future because the past can not be changed, but the future can be made better. However, the most important thing is remember that we live in the present, and we should not ignore it either in the nostalgia or regret for the past, nor forget it in the mad obsession with present.
I will give you a little example. Take the case of a child. His parents and he himself needs to plan for his future- what he should study, what should he become, what course should he follow for that, etc...unless they plan when he is young, it will be too late when he grows up. But that does not mean the boy gives up his present, his childhood games and joys and only study and work for his future.
Take another example. Suppose a businessman loses all money because of a wrong decision. He must learn from his mistake but it does not help to only blame himself or others for the past. He must pick himself up and live again, try to rebuild his career and life.
Neither the past, nor the future nor the present should be ignored. All are important. Learn from and remember your past, plan your future, but live for your present, because as the saying goes-" The past is history, the future is mystery, but the present is a present"- God's gift to man.

Past can be thought of only to the extent it is relevant for the present and the future. Otherwise it is bound to unnecessarily entangle one in revengeful pursuits against the adversaries. Why to bother future generations for the wrong doings of past generations. Adverse divisions created in past should not be allowed to ruin the future of the subsequent generations. Valuable knowledge, good traditions, ethical and moral values and other noble fundamentals of the society get a permanent place and remain almost the same over diffrent periods. Glorification of past evil social customs and practices, superstitions, social systems influenced by sinful, tyrannical and unjust acts etc. is like digging up graves for the future generations.

there is no reason to think about changing the past since it one cannot get there and it would have no effect on the present. one cannot get there because it is impossible to fold all of space to make a wormhole or to rip space cleanly. it would have no effect on the present because a change in the past would just create a different timeline all together (i think everyone has seen back to the future to get this).

to make a clear point, thoughts of change are always placed in the future. so even if you did think to change the past it would be a future plan. the setting itself be it past present or future doesn't matter. if the thought is of changing and is a thought then its action is in the future.

The past is past. Can't change the past, but we can alter the future because it hasn't happened yet. The past can, however, help us to know how we want to build our future.

Whether we think of the past or the future remember we can live only in the present. Some live in this minute, some in the hour, some in the day and there are some who live in the year. It is relative (time is relative , is'nt it?).

Who said so? Thinking of your past brings tears, thinking of your future brings fears, so it is best for everyone to think of their present which brings everyone cheers. Think!!!! If you think only of your present how will your future or past be affected. It won't affect you and you could be free from Past and future, fears or tears, whatever it could be. So Be a Zen master.Take care.

It is partially true as we have think of past experiences and think about our future, with due care.
Secondly what has happened is happened. we can not do any thing so forget past and think about future.
