Magic never really had handles, he led the league in turnovers, for a number of years, best ball handler by far would have to be Isaiah Thomas.

It depends on what your criteria for ball handling is. Does it include passing, or perhaps the ability to beat your opponent off the dribble, or simply not turning the ball over?

If it's passing then perhaps Magic is right there among the top players because he sees the court well due to his size. John Stockton would also be there, along with Larry Bird, Pete Maravich, Steve Nash and Jason Williams.

If it's being able to beat your opponent off the dribble, then players like Tim Hardaway, Steve Nash, Bob Cousy, Kevin Johnson, and Michael Jordan are right up there.

As for protecting the ball, John Stockton, Magic Johnson (due to his size where he simply protects the ball with his body), Mo Cheeks, and NBA career leader Muggsy Bogues come to mind.
