Not at all the most egocentric people are very insecure and tend to overcompensate and make themselves feel important. Confident people don't need this self-delusional validation, they tend to quietly know their strengths and weaknesses and tend to be good at helping others with their problems.

Egos can grow due to insecurity, as a defence mechanism.
Edit - I agree with the guy above, it's inversely proportional.
The lower the confidence, the bigger the ego tends to be, in compensation.

no:
Ego is about how much you love and accept yourself. What is often classed as 'ego' is in fact egotism. This is not the same thing at all. Egotism is a cover for low ego strength
Confidence is about the trust you have in your abilities and skills
Many people are driven by the feelings that they are worthless but they can be loved because they are skilled

~~~ No. Of course not. I don't have a big ego at all,yet I am highly intelligent and brilliant. I am the smartest person I know and quite humble about it. I don't mean to brag but I am Mensa material. On top of brains I am also extremely beautiful. I am very quiet about all my envious qualities that I possess. And quite shy. Still, I can honestly proclaim...I am not on an ego trip. ~~~
On the contrary , I would call it lack of confidence in self . Ego is the camouflage of lack of confidence in right amount .
A confident person does not need to act in vain
Define ego. It doesn't have to mean overcompensation for an insecurity. It could simply mean confidence which is how I understand it. The other responders think it's the former.
I would say it's indirectly porportional. Humans with little confidence are more egocentric to make up their lack of confidence and versa visa.
