Seriously, before lights there was flame or fire wouldn't moths have extinct themselves

they are attracted to light but repelled by extreme heat

they would fly around lamps and candles - light a candle and see for yourself

seriously, there was flame before electric light. There was also gas light. However, the number of moths that got fried was much smaller than the total population, so the chance of extinction is minimal.

Moths gather around lights because they navigate by the light of the moon. Since the moon is so far away it is a relatively fixed point of light in the sky, and they use it as a frame of reference for their direction.

When moths encounter a light source that is much closer to them, like a street light, they are unable to fix it in the sky, and begin circling.

Before electricity, they went where they wanted.

good question. i was about to say flames or fire. i'd think they'd go to any bright light source, but wouldn't that mean that they'd head towards the flames of a forrest fire?

Bugs do fly right into fire because of the light. Maybe they only came out on moonlit nights. Or they chased lightning bugs.
