Here's a cool thing to try.

Use 4 parts sand, 3 parts water, 2 parts cornstarch, and a tablespoon of Listerine or other disinfectant (to inhibit mold). Mix them in an old pot (the sand will scratch). Cook the mixture over medium heat until it becomes thick, like clay. Turn it out on newspapers to cool. Shape it as you would modeling dough. You can dry the pieces in the sun or bake them in a 250 degree oven. If you don't use it right away, you can store it for a week or two in a plastic bag.

When dry, it is hard and stonelike. It is not waterproof, though, so don't get it wet.

I make this concoction for art festivals, and it's always a big hit. I usually leave in the middle to go home and make some more, even when I make much more than I think we can use.

Why do you not try paper? Well it also depends where would you like to put your sculpure? Exterior is aslo good, but in case of rain it becames to be a procesual art. Whitch is not so bad if you want it.
