My betta fish has some minor tail rot. I went to the pet store and bought BettaFix. I have a 10 gallon tank, with a filter, and after treating him for 4 days, i ran out of medicine. The directions state to treat him for 7 days then do a water change. The pet store clerk said that i would not need to do a water change, the medicine would not hurt him. Today I noticed that the water has a slight swirly white substance to the top surface. is this bad for my fish? or is he still being treated? Please help! Thank you!!

I would make it a policy to trust the package over pet shop employees 99% of the time. Unless you have a good relationship with the shop and KNOW you can trust them, assume their training is limited to how to net and bag fish and how to make a sale.

BTW, I wouldn't recommend using Bettafix for the treatment of any disease. Fin rot is a bacterial infection that really needs an antibiotic like Furan-2, Maracyn or Maracyn TC

Um, what?!

The directions said to treat the fish everyday for 7 days without doing a water change? No you're not going to overdose the fish, but there is no benefit to using that much. Sadly WAY TO MUCH stuff is produced and labled for the benefit of the makers wallet than the good of the fish. At least when it comes to the aquarium hobby.

Just by melafix next time, its the exact same thing.

White swirly white substance, if it put you in mind of the way gasoline pools on water, yes, this is the tea tree oil. It does it because it is an oil.

When you put your carbon back in, it will go away.

Your fish is still being treated. It takes quite a while for it to "break down" in the water, unless you put your carbon back in, or you do a water change. The pet store clerk was completely correct on this one.

Could the white stuff be a bubble nest? The clerk is wrong, perhaps the medication won't the fish but do a water change in a day or two. Good luck.-----PeeTee
