Scientology is not a cult! Who are you to define what is and is not a religion? This is a free country where we are given the opportunity to believe as we wish!
You can't discuss the Church of Scientology without your biased, bigoted opinions! You are a racist, a bigot and a slanderer! Our research also indicates that you are a sexual deviant and once stole a pen from the bank, so everything you say is disregarded and we will now stalk you for the rest of your life! Fair Game!

When you look at the benefits of Scientology, it sounds fantastic--the rules that they suggest a person live by are incredibly beneficial for the body and mind. When you look at the actual history and literal interpretations of it, however, it sounds like a crazy cult.

Both my parents were part of Scientology through most of my childhood, however they never asked me to participate in anything. My mom now attends a Lutheran-esque type church but still reminisces about the things she learned from her experiences with Scientology.

I believe Scientology is a cult. L. Ron Hubbard was a failed science fiction writer in the 1950's 60's and his books weren't selling well. He made a bet with a fellow science fiction writer that he could invent a religion out of his books. And that's just what he did. According to him, we all come from the planet, Xenu. ( read Dianetics) I think it's a dangerous dangerous cult. They are against things that have helped millions of people. Like antidepressants. Like psychiatry. Those two things compete with them, and they don't like it. Tom Cruise is an arrogant jerk and so is John Travolta. Scientology also has a special center for celebrities. It's a total brainwashing scam.

In the late 1940s, pulp writer L. Ron Hubbard declared:
"Writing for a penny a word is ridiculous. If a man really wants to make a million dollars, the best way would be to start his own religion"
Reader's Digest reprint, May 1980, p.1
Hubbard later created the Church of Scientology...

Because I've heard so much about it, I read through a good chunk of Dianetics, and to be honest, so far it seemed to be quite reasonable.

What I got out of what I read was that it's a type of therapy where you work on negative beliefs with a partner, trying to "clear" them.

I never went further than what I read, so don't know much more than that.

However, after seeing the recent video on youtube, I think it's a pretty stupid organization.

The way the leader acted was incredibly childish, arrogant, and even illegal. You could clearly see that he was very judgmental, was spying on and stalking people, and was a character assassin. Of course from time to time a spiritual leader may have shortcomings, but that was too much. It was pathetic, dangerous, and malicious.

I guess that the stars that get into it maybe see something like what I first saw, then don't get much deeper into it. Otherwise, they'd leave if they knew what was going on.

In the late 1940s, pulp writer L. Ron Hubbard declared, "Writing for a penny a word is ridiculous. If a man really wants to make a million dollars, the best way would be to start his own religion." And so, L Ron Hubbard "INVENTED" this religion.

I love reading the "True History" of this religion. L.Ron Hubbard and a friend invented this religion as an experiment and entertainment.

If you can find the true history of this religion, it's definately worth reading for a good laugh.

Interesting answers. All of the venom and vindiction directed at Sceintology is amazing, especially coming from the deists. Nearly every arguement above can just as easily be applied to their own cullts. It takes a lot of pots and kettles to make a world.

In all honesty it's not that much stranger than some others.

Humans arriving via spaceship vs being a pile of dirt breathed into life. Which is harder to believe?
